An architectural masterpiece, the Jerónimos Monastery is one of the most decorative churches in Portugal and Belém’s undisputed heart-stealer. It is situated in Belėm district and it is historically associated with the early explorers, as it is here that Vasco da Gama spent his last night (1497) before his voyage to the Far East. The construction itself lasted for 100 years.
A visit to the monastery through the western portal gives you the view of the tree-like columns that seem to grow into the ceiling, which itself is a spider web of stone. The remains of Vasco da Gama are interred in the lower channel, opposite Luís Vaz de Camões the poet. There are the breathtaking honey-stone cloisters, with their delicately scooped arches, twisting turrets and columns intertwined with leaves, vines, and knots. It’s just wow!!
In the west wing of Jerónimos Monastery is the Museu Nacional de Arqueologia, a one of a kind worldwide. It contains the most impressive collection in Portugal, from Egyptian mummies, to mesolithic flintstones, to bronze age artifacts, to statues dedicated to Roman deities.
To get to Jerónimos Monastery use the tram15, buses or train. Also, the ferry is available.
