Gym FAQ for travelers
Traveling to a new destination isn’t the time to let up on your gym routine, especially as the world is filled with astonishing gyms that will give you a workout you’ll neither forget nor regret.
Below you’ll find a small FAQ answering the most common questions that arise when you want to visit a gym when traveling.
How easy is it to access a gym when you travel?
With so much data available now, it’s gradually becoming easier to find and access gyms in an unfamiliar city or area. There’s a huge wealth of information on the internet on fitness clubs and gyms in every neighbourhood.
In every frequent travel destination, you’ll be able to find extensive information on the best gyms. The big question comes when, as a traveller, you try to get access to a new gym. Finding the gym is one thing, but getting through the doors and actually getting your workout in sometimes presents more of a challenge.
This varies from country to country. In the US, for example, there’s a culture of guest visits to gyms, so many gyms offer an easy-access gym day pass. In Europe the picture is much more mixed, with day pass options varying from gym to gym. Fortunately, technology has now made it much easier to locate a gym offering day passes.
What’s the best way to find a gym when you travel?
Finding a gym you can actually get into in another country will usually mean more research than you have the time for; that’s the whole reason we built the TrainAway platform. After all, everything else is so easy and convenient when you travel these days – so why can’t it be the same with gym visits?
So here’s how we’d recommend you go about finding a gym with easy day pass access when you travel:
Check to see if there are TrainAway gyms in your destination yet. If so, select a partner gym, buy a day pass and head to the gym.
If not, start with a Google search. Find the gym the suits your needs best, remembering to find a balance between location and the facilities you need.
Contact the email directly, via email or online form. Let them know you’re planning to visit and would like to know options for guest visits. Customer service at gyms has greatly improved in recent years, and you’ll usually find their responses fast and informative.
You should now have the price, registration process, facilities and location of the gym, allowing you to make an informed choice of gym
You may be lucky enough to find the gym on a local fitness platform, which will normally get you in easier, and have a clearer process. However, be aware that some such platforms are restricted to locals only.
How much do gym facilities differ from country to country?
Fitness clubs differ greatly depending on where in the world you find yourself, and the level of choice between clubs often depends on your destination. In developed fitness markets the baseline is higher, so even standard gyms will have a full complement of facilities.
Even in less developed markets, there are usually quality gyms available. With the global reach of fitness brands, the layout and construction of gyms is broadly similar wherever you are in the world. What does differ more, however, is price. The more competitive the market is, the better the facilities you will have access to.
What’s the normal price of a gym day pass?
There’s huge variation in the fitness industry, from high-end to budget, which is reflected in the price of gym day passes. In general, working out on a pay-as-you-go basis is rarely cheaper than a membership. The least expensive day passes you’ll find are $5, with most $10 or higher.
Much depends on your travel destination; in Eastern Europe or Asia, for example, you’ll find very different prices to Paris or New York City. There are premium, more expensive gyms in almost every city, while others have a fantastic selection of low-cost gyms with good facilities.
TrainAway’s goal is to provide you with all the options. From the budget chain with a cheap gym day pass with just enough equipment to get by, to gyms with quality and facilities that will have your eyes rolling twice, you’ll be able to find a gym that matches your budget and demands.

Why workout when you travel?
Nowadays, most of us travel at least once every quarter and if you’re a business traveler, it’s a whole other story. It’s inevitable that traveling will interfere with your active routine and in turn, the health results you’ve been working so hard on in your everyday life.
Getting back on track time and time again is risky business, as most studies indicate that you actually don’t. So, it’s time to take your fitness with you on the road. The most common reason for not getting a workout done on a business trip or vacation – is time and convenience.
TrainAway want to remove every barrier and pain point there might be for hitting the gym while away – so all that stand in the way of maintaining your fitness and health, is your own motivation.
