Marais is a historic quartier of Paris, a hidden gem in the city and favorite of many Parisians that is becoming popular with tourists as well. The area which once was the choice of the aristocracy is located in the 4th arrondissement and it is easily reachable from Hotel de Ville metro station on Line 1. Marais avoided the extensive rebuilding of Paris in the 19th century and has the most medieval feeling in the city with many pre-revolution buildings and streets still intact.
Marais is famous for its hotel particuliers (mansions), narrow cobblestone streets, quiet gardens, cafés and galleries, as well as a vibrant Jewish and LGBT community. With many of the mansions renovated, the best thing you can do is to give yourself a few hours to wander around in the quartier and explore the little side streets, amazing street arts and kosher restaurants.
Nearby must-see attractions include the Place des Vosges, Centre Pompidou and many museums, like the Picasso Museum.
Every district of Paris is full of high quality gyms with a great selection of free weights and state of the art machines as French people are very concerned with staying healthy. Most of the centers also offer group classes, such as yoga and Pilates. Two gyms we definitely recommend near Marais is Neoness Paris République and Neoness Chatelet-Montorgueil.
As membership models in Paris are becoming more flexible, travelers can easily find gyms offering day passes. However, as the French are very proud of their language, you might experience some problems using English. With TrainAway you can easily buy day passes via the app to high quality gyms, allowing you to stay fit while being on a holiday or business trip.
