Tartu is Estonia’s second biggest city and often considered Estonia’s intellectual centre of the country. The Supreme Court of Estonia, the Ministry of Education and Research, and the National Museum are also situated in Tartu. Unlike Tallinn, however, Tartu is quite homogenous and home to mostly Estonians.
Historically, like all of Estonia, Tartu has come under the rule of many different nations, including but not limited to Poland, Lithuania, Sweden, Russia, the Soviet Union, and Nazi Germany. Since its independence, much of Tartu has been restored after the damages caused by the second World War.
