Formerly known as Victory Square and Straw Market, Freedom Square sits on the southern edge of Tallinn’s Old Town. The square has always been a central location for parades such as those on International Workers Day, and is now especially lively during concerts and military ceremonies. It was completely redesigned in 2009, and now features benches, cafes and two art galleries, which makes it a popular gathering spot. The Monument to the War of Independence was also added, depicted as a pillar with a cross on top.
Although most of the square was rebuilt you can still see a lot of heritage sights, including one that will sit just below you. One part of the square’s floor is made of glass, beneath which you can see archeological remains of the medieval Harju Gate tower. On the eastern end of the square you can see the gorgeous 19th century St John’s Lutheran Church
Freedom Square sits in the heart of Tallinn, so you can easily find a gym near you. A popular gym with day pass in the area is MyFitness Solaris which is located in the Solaris shopping center, a short walk away. This urban gym is one of the most popular spots for fitness in Tallinn, particularly because of its convenient location, spacious training areas and high-end equipment.
