Palacio de la Moneda is the seat of the government and one of the most representative symbols of Chile’s political history. It is a neoclassical building designed in the late 18th century and originally intended to be a coin mint headquarters.
The main attraction of the building is on the outside. It is among Santiago’s most impressive structures. Observing this building from the Plaza de la Constitución gives you an elegant view of it. There are two canons at the entrance of the building. If you arrive before 10:00 a.m. you can watch the changing of guard ceremony which takes place every odd-numbered day. During the event there are songs by the marching band, exchanging of salutes and finally the rendition of the Chilean national anthem.
Visit the cultural center located in the south in Plaza de la Ciudadania. It features two galleries and a principle rotating exhibition. There are artworks from Chilean artists and sometimes they host cultural events.
To visit Palacio de la Moneda, use the metro to La Moneda and exit on Teatinos. The building is a 10-minute walk from the Plaza de Armas. Public buses are also available. Tour buses are also available for a city tour.
