The Chilean Museum of Pre-Columbian Art in Santiago Chile is rated among the best museums in Latin America and a must-see for any visitor to Chile. The museum exhibits most Pre-Columbian cultures, with a collection that presents a critical period of human and cultural development.
Garcia-Moreno an antique collector amassed an impressive collection of Pre-Columbian artifacts over five decades. With the support of the city government he turned this private collection into the museum it is today. The museum is housed in Palacio de la Real Aduana completed in 1807 within Santiago’s historic center.
Some of the major exhibits include the Maya stone columns, towering Mapuche totems, and the Andean textile display. Others are the masks from the Aconcagua Valley dating to the 3rd century and a mummy from the northern coast dating to 1900 B.C.
The museum groups the cultural artifacts of the Americas grouped according to their cultural areas. They are the Amazonian, Central Andes, Southern Andes, Intermediate, Caribbean, and Mesoamerica. These regions represent over 100 cultures. Descriptions of the pieces also tell the visitors their use in the culture that they relate to. The displays are in both English and Spanish and their display makes it easy to walk through the exhibits.
