Mount Royal is a small mountain covering 10 km2 and consisting of three peaks immediately west of Downtown Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The city of Montreal actually got its name from the mountain. Contrary to popular belief, it is not ancient volcano, it was shaped by million years of erosion. The first European who scaled the mountain was Jacques Cartier in 1535 and he named the place Mount Royal in honor of his patron, Francis I of France.
The area developed continuously, for example McGill University, one of Canada’s first academic institutions was established on the mountain in 1821. The Mount Royal Park was inaugurated in 1876 and it was designed by renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, who was also commissioned to create Central Park in New York City.
There are many attractions inside the park as well as on the mountain itself, for example the George-Étienne Cartier Monument, the Mount Royal Cross, the Beaver Lake, Saint Joseph’s Oratory of Mount Royal and different university campuses.
