Töölö is a name that encompasses two neighborhoods west of Helsinki city center, which are Etu-Töölö and Taka-Töölö. The area was mainly developed between 1920–1930 as answer to many new residents arriving to the city, so most of the buildings are built in the Nordic Classicism style. The area is particularly popular among the lovers of architecture, arts and is also home to the Finland’s parliamentary institutions. Popular symbols in the area is the Sibelius Monument built with 600 steel pipes and the unique Rock Church which is mainly directly carved out from natural rock.
The art appreciators shouldn’t miss the Kunsthalle Helsinki, which is considered to be one of the most beautiful and comprehensive art spaces in the city. If you want to spend some time in nature, walk through the lovely Hesperian park which will lead you to the Hietaranta Beach which gets particularly crowded during the warmer months. Sport lovers will be stunned with the largest stadium in the country, Olympia Stadium, and bookworms will get lost in one of the countless antique book stores dotted throughout the neighborhood.
During the summer, the residents of Helsinki Restaurant Töölö will spend most of the time outdoor, but during the dark winter months gyms near Töölö truly come alive. A popular Töölö gym is the ELIXIA BASE Töölö, an urban club with a great selection of equipment that caters to beginners and professional athletes alike, and easy access with the TrainAway day passes.
If you’re looking to dine in Töölö, you should especially focus on small neighborhood restaurants that serve traditional Finnish food. Some of the best such restaurants are the artistic Ateljé Finne and Restaurant Elite, and the Restaurant Perho, where your meal will be prepared by a student training to be a chef.
