West End is the other district located on the peninsula in the north-central part of the City of Vancouver. It is one of the most densely populated areas of the city. Many consider it to be part of Downtown Vancouver but the city itself officially makes distinction between the two areas. On three sides, it is bounded by water: the Lost Lagoon in Stanley Park, the English Bay and the Coal Harbour and Downtown Vancouver on the fourth. Until 1862 the area was heavily forested when three gentlemen, John Morton, Samuel Brighouse, and William Hailstone, known as the Three Greenhorns, each purchased 73 hectares (180 acres) of land which became the city’s first upscale neighbourhood, home to the richest railroad families. Today the area includes Davie Village, which is traditionally a hub for the city’s gay community, Denman Street with local shops and restaurants and parts of Robson Street known for shopping and Alberni Street, famous for its restaurants and luxury brands. West End also includes numerous parks and beaches, such as Alexandra Park, Cardero Park, Nelson Park, Stanley Park with the Seawall, Sunset Beach and English Bay Beach. The beaches are the most popular spots for watching the annual Celebration of Light Fireworks Competition, while the streets of the area also host the Vancouver Pride Parade and the Vancouver Sun Run.
The number of gyms offering a wide variety of fitness facilities and classes and the number of signed up members in Vancouver are both increasing in recent years. Due to that, travelers can easily find gyms in Vancouver offering flexible entry solutions such as day passes or one-off workouts. With the TrainAway app you can search for and get access to such gyms without any hassle. When you are in the West End area, we recommend checking out either Steve Nash Fitness World – Downtown Express or Steve Nash Fitness World – Howe and Davie.
