Moscow has many impressive landmarks, but none is as universally recognizable as Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built in 1560 on Red Square, following an order from Ivan the Terrible who wanted to commemorate the defeat of Kazan. It was declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1990 and is particularly interesting for its colorful domes that were painted in the 17th century. The domes represent nine chapels inside the cathedral, each engraved and painted with traditional Orthodox icons.
The Saint Basil’s Cathedral no longer serves its religious purpose and is now turned into a museum. While going through its intimate corridors you will see more than 400 icons that will guide you through its rich history. Due to its central location on the Red Square, you can find many other attractions, restaurants and gyms near Saint Basil’s Cathedral, and it is also in the vicinity of the second largest landmark in the city, Moscow’s Kremlin.
New sports clubs are constantly emerging in Moscow, and you can easily wind a gym near Saint Basil’s Cathedral in the TrainAway app. There is a quite impressive gym with day pass nearby, called World Class Romanov. It’s one of the most popular gyms for travelers in the city center, not only for its vicinity to major landmarks but also for its modern equipment and facilities that will suit everyone’s exercise style.
