When in Rome, you don’t want to miss visiting Piazza di Spagna and Scalina Spagna – the Spanish Steps. Wondering why it is called Spanish in the middle of Rome? The steps that were built in the 18th century got their name from the nearby Spanish embassy. Follow the footsteps of Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck from A Roman Holiday and visit this iconic site in the heart of Rome.
If you’re tired of climbing (there are 135 steps!) just sit down and enjoy the view until you’re ready to go again. Just remember: you can’t eat on the stairs due to regulations as an effort to keep the site as clean as possible. You might as well use the elevator of the nearby metro station to get on the top. Once up there, you can visit Trinità dei Monti church which can be a nice, quiet getaway from the crowd and noise of the Spanish Steps.
Being so central, you can easily continue exploring the city after a stop at the Spanish Steps. For one, Villa Borghese Park is a great mix of walking trails, a small lake with boat rentals, a zoo, cafes, and two great art museums, the Galleria Borghese and the National Etruscan Museum at Villa Giulia. All of this is just a few minutes away on foot from the Spanish Steps.
Italy has the fourth largest fitness industry in Europe and a reported number of 5.3 million people in Italy are signed up to a gym, which represents 10.5% of the entire population. Despite having one of the most active fitness industries in all of Europe, Italy has an low English proficiency index. Therefore, getting access to gyms while you’re in Italy on holiday or business could be more difficult than expected, so using Trainaway to buy day passes will remove the language barrier.
If you want more work out than climbing those 135 steps of the Spanish Steps, visit Dabliu Fitness Suite. The gym is located just at the top of the Spanish Steps in the heart of Rome.
