Kilmainham Gaol (Irish: Príosún Chill Mhaighneann) was opened as the new county jail in 1796 and was closed in 1924. It is the symbol of the modern Ireland’s emergence and their rebellion against British domination as leaders from various rebellions, for example from the Easter rising in 1916, were imprisoned and executed here by British troops. However, as a county jail, Kilmainham also held thousands of ordinary men, women and even children, their crimes ranging from petty offences such as stealing food to more serious crimes such as murder or rape. Convicts from many parts of Ireland were held here for long periods waiting to be transported to Australia. Today, it is one of the largest unoccupied gaols in Europe and operates as a museum. Access is by guided tours only and it is advised that visitors book their tickets online in advance.
Nearby attractions include the Irish National War Memorial Park, the Phoenix Park (including the Dublin Zoo) and Guinness Storehouse.
According to a recent study, 12.2% of the population of Ireland is a regular gym member. They can enjoy their workouts in high quality gyms which offer a great mix of free weights, cardio machines and group classes. As they prefer flexible membership models to be able to work out whenever and wherever they want, more and more gyms in Dublin are offering one-off and day pass access.
Travelers can also benefit from this trend, however, most gyms still require guests to sign up. With TrainAway, you can avoid the hassle as via the app you can search for and get full access to such gyms within a minute. If you’re heading back towards the city center after visiting Kilmainham Gaol, we recommend 1Escape Health Club on the north side of River Liffey and Gym Plus – Clarendon Street on the south side.
