Located at the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and New York Avenue NW in the heart of Washington, Mount Vernon Square is an interesting blend of history and modern times, which is most visible in its architecture. Its development began in 1845, when the Northern Liberties Market was opened as a response to a petition by the residents. 30 years later, the market was transferred into a larger building that was also the Convention Hall in the city, but was unfortunately devastated during a fire in 1946. However, that didn’t stop the neighborhood from growing further, and the new Walter E. Washington Convention Center was built in 2003. Covering 2,300,000-square-foot this intricate structure quickly became one of the most important landmarks in the area.
The Carnegie Library is the centerpiece of Mount Vernon Square since it was first built 1899 as a result of an investment from Andrew Carnegie. Today, it’s home to flagship store from Apple and DC History Center that encompasses a library, exhibition space and a gift shop. Mount Vernon Square also offers famous restaurants, including Michelle Obama’s favorite Ottoman Taverna. Sixth & I Synagogue is the place to go in the evening, when it hosts interesting live podcasts, concerts and comedy shows.
Mount Vernon Square is located in the central part of Washington, and there are many gyms within walking distance of the neighborhood. VIDA Fitness – Gallery Place is a ten minutes walk away, and it offers tons of workout options and supplemental services through four floors of the iconic Gallery Place building. It’s one of the best options for tourists, as it offers everything you might need to stay active during your vacation in Mount Vernon Square, including convenient gym day passes that you can book through the TrainAway app.
