Wat Phra Kaew, called the Temple of the Emerald Buddha in English, is considered to be the most important Buddhist temple in Thailand. It’s located in the outer court of the Grand Palace in the center of Bangkok. The construction of the palace and the temple began in 1782, when the role of Thailand’s capital was switched from Thonburi to Bangkok. What sets the Temple of the Emerald Buddha apart from other temples in the country is that it doesn’t have a monastery. This opened up space for a more exaggerated decor.
The striking architecture of the temple is achieved with a number of sacred buildings, each embellished with detail-packed carvings and murals. In the center of it all sits the Emerald Buddha statue, which was sculpted from a single block of jade and dressed in golden clothes. Though the statue measures less than 70 cm, it is one of the most significant versions of Buddha for Thai people, and is believed that worshiping him brings good luck to your life. If you want to enjoy the tranquility and striking imagery of the temple, you will have to wear appropriate clothes. Since many tourists aren’t aware of the dress code, the temple also borrows suitable clothes to visitors, which includes long shirts and pants. To reach the temple you can catch the MRT Subway, a river boat or a taxi.
