Probably the most visited part of Copenhagen, yet among the hardest for visitors to pronounce, Nyhavn (pronounced noo-hown) is the picture postcard view of Copenhagen. The historic harbourfront is lined by houses of different colours, fronted by picturesque historic boats sitting in the canal, occupied by thousands of tourists each day.
Originally built to provide an easy way to transport goods from the main harbour to the city centre close to 350 years ago, the area became a centre for maritime trade and commerce, with the different coloured houses identifying the different merchants occupying them. As the size of trading vessels grew, they became too large for Nyhavn and it became an area for sailors to spend their shore leave.
The merchants’ houses began to be occupied by bars and restaurants, with full scale renewal taking place in the late 1980s, leading to Nyhavn becoming an extremely visitor-friendly place, with countless bars, restaurants, cafes and superb photo spots, open year round. The area is supremely accessible, located on Kongens Nytorv (the King’s New Square), reachable on every metro line.
Being one of Copenhagen’s busiest spots for travelers, you’ll find a range of gym options for travelers in this area. Gyms here are used to tourists looking for casual gym access, so you won’t have too much trouble finding a good gym close to Nyhavn. Our recommendation would be Charlottehaven, a few minutes by public transport but well worth the effort due to the high quality of the gym and easy gym access. Day passes are available on the TrainAway app.
