Located between the Innenstadt and the river Main, Altstadt, literally Old Town, is the Frankfurt’s historic district that had existed from the year 794, when the city was first mentioned. However, not many of the old buildings survived, as the district went through two major reconstructions, one after a large fire in 1719, and the second after the World War II. That’s why today the locals commonly call the area New Frankfurt Old Town. However, though you won’t see the architecture as it was 1000 years ago, many of the buildings were reconstructed as they were in the past, so you’ll still be able to observe how the city changed with time. One of such spots is the Römer city hall and square, that dates from the 12th century when it served as a trade hub. The city hall was brought back to its original shape in 2017, and so was the majestic St. Peter’s Church that can be found just across the street.
There are several other interesting heritage spots at the Romer square, including the Ostzeile building complex that encompasses 6 houses from the 15th and 16th-century, and the Fountain of Justice, a birthplace of several local legends. Other than seeing all those structures for yourself, another way to learn about the old times in Frankfurt is to visit its Museum Of History that exhibits the history of the area, from prehistoric times to modern era. There are plenty of other venues where you can see exhibitions in Altstadt, such as the Cathedral Museum, Frankfurt Art Association and the Schirn Art Gallery.
The city wanted to maintain the Altstadt’s historic value and buildings, so you will not find many gyms there. Luckily, it’s bordered by Innenstadt, where you have many workout opportunities to choose from. If you’d like to avoid language barriers and are looking for a gym near Altstadt Frankfurt, we would recommend the PRIME TIME FITNESS Main Tower, it’s only located 10 minutes away. This gym provides a view on the modern day facilities and services, and is a perfect contrast to the historic sites in Altstadt.
