U Street

The center of black culture in the past, U Street is still one of the nightlife centers of the city and a must-visit for music lovers. During the day, you should visit the African American Civil War Memorial and Museum that commemorate the 200,000 African American Union soldiers that fought during the civil war. However, you don’t have to visit a museum to enjoy art in this street, as its dotted with outstanding murals, some of which were commissioned by the Phillips Collection.

If you want to eat like the locals, 60 year old Ben’s Chili Bowl is an unskippable stop. However, the U Street is also known as the “Little Ethiopia” as it’s home to many traditional Ethiopian restaurants, such as the famous Dukem Restaurant. The U Street truly comes to life after sunset, when you can enjoy live music in the underground U Street Music Hall or the classy Howard Theatre.
