Estonian Open Air Museum occupies a large portion of the Rocca Al Mare district which is around 8 km west from Tallinn city center. The museum showcases Estonian rural lifestyle and architecture, and does so through 14 farms which represent different regions of the country. There you can see original layouts of farmhouses and windmills, to get a first hand experience of village life in Estonia. All along the museum, you will see staff dressed in traditional costumes and showcasing the day-to-day life of an Estonian farmer.
Besides farms, there are many other stand-alone buildings, such as the renovated Sutlepa chapel that dates from the 17th century, the Orgmetsa fire station and the 19th century Kuie school which now serves as museums’ educational center. The Lau village shop is interesting for its architecture, but it also serves as the major spot to buy authentic souvenirs and products. When you complete your exploration, you can enjoy a traditional meal at the Kolu Inn.
