Trinity College, or officially the College of the Holy and Undivided Trinity of Queen Elizabeth near Dublin was founded in 1592 by Queen Elizabeth I. It is the only collegiate of the University of Dublin. It is one of the most prestigious university of not just Ireland but Europe, usually ranked within the Top100 in different university rankings. Trinity College has a sister college at both the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge. Women were first admitted to the college as full-time students in 1904. Today Trinity College has a vibrant international community of almost 17,000 students, 92,000 alumni and 2,860 members of staff, representing over 120 nationalities.
The College is also famous for its amazing library, containing over 6.2 million books, volumes and manuscripts, for example the Book of Kells. Book of Kells is a manuscript from the 9th century that documents the four Gospels of the life of Jesus Christ and it is Ireland’s greatest cultural treasure and the world’s most famous medieval manuscript. It is displayed as part of an exhibition which also gives access to the Long Room that houses 200,000 of Trinity College’s oldest books.
